I was lucky to have been part of five World Cups. I was fortunate to have won 2 World Championships in 1991 and 1999. It was an amazing feeling to have been part of the first World Cup ever and winning. We won in front of 64,000 fans in China. We came back to the states ready to celebrate with our fans and 2 people were at the airport to greet us. Eight years later we won again and the country celebrated with us. We won in front of 90,000 fans in Pasadena California while 40 million watched us on ABC. Those moments are forever embedded in my brain. Now this summer the U.S. is out to win the World Cup. It has been 16 years since the U.S. has won and they want it bad.
This year the World Cup will host 24 teams, 8 teams more than last World Cup. It is a great sign because it shows how far women’s soccer has come and how much the sport has grown. These 24 teams will compete to be the best in the World. There are some countries like Costa Rica, Thailand and Cameroon who will play in their first World Cup ever. While countries like Germany, Brazil, Sweden and the U.S. will be competing in the World Cup for the 7th time. For 30 days the World will come together to compete to be the best in the World and the rest of the World will sit back and watch.
